O incercare de prezentare a teatrului francez, din Evul Mediu si pana in secolul al XVII-lea nu pare a fi lipsita intru totul de obstacole. Cuvantul "teatru", a carui etimologie se regaseste in verbul grec "theaomai" (a contempla), desemneaza, inainte de toate "un loc unde privim". Ori in Evul Mediu, spre diferenta de epoca clasica, nu exista un loc precis, rezervat reprezentatiei teatrale. Exista, pe de alta parte, tendinta de a atribui teatrului francez o calitate literara deosebita. Daca Moliere, Racine, Corneille sunt, intr-adevar, nume mari ale literaturii franceze, situatia este cu totul alta in secolele XII-XV. Din sutele de texte conservate, doar despre cateva se poate afirma ca au o valoare literara de netagaduit. Aceasta realitate nu trebuie sa il mire pe cititorul modern, caci inainte de domnia lui Ludovic al XIV-lea, cel care a nutrit proiectul ambitios de hegemonie culturala a Frantei in Europa, teatrul francez trebuie mai degraba inteles ca o "arta", o "practica" cu o importanta sociala covarsitoare. Mai mult decat o reflectie sintetica asupra genurilor dramatice din Evul Mediu si pana in secolul al XVII-lea, prezenta lucrare se doreste a fi o analiza a productiei dramatice a epocilor enuntate, care privilegiaza contextul istoric si social.
